👨👩👧 Great for families, novice or first-timer snorkelers.
💡 Pure Life Tip: Arrive before 9 AM for calmer conditions and easier parking.
3️⃣ Honolua Bay (North Maui)
🌴 A short rainforest trail leads to this scenic bay.
🐠 Coral thrives beyond the rocky shoreline — vibrant fish everywhere.
🌿 A lush rainforest trail leads to this breathtaking cove with calm, clear waters and coral gardens near the rocky edges.
🐢 Expect schools of butterflyfish, tangs, and occasional turtles.
💛 Why you’ll love it: This is one of our absolute favorite best snorkeling in Maui spots, perfect for travelers seeking a mix of adventure and tranquility.
💡 Pure Life Tip: Bring bug spray — the shaded forest is lush and humid.
4️⃣ Westin Kāʻanapali Ocean Resort Villas – Reef Front at Kāʻanapali Beach
🏖️ Located directly on the beautiful Kāʻanapali Beach, right in front of the resort you’ll find a vibrant, healthy reef that’s perfect for casual snorkeling.
🐢 You’ll often spot turtles grazing close to shore, and coral growth remains impressive despite the popularity of the beach.
💡 Pure Life Podcast Tip: Stay nearby at Westin Kāʻanapali Ocean Resort Villas for easy reef access. The house reef is truly one of the best snorkeling in Maui spots – healthy, with a large mushroom coral where a resident turtle hides. Occasionally, reef sharks glide by — a gentle reminder we’re visitors in their ocean.
Book your stay at the Westin Kāʻanapali Ocean Resort Villas here.
5️⃣ Black Rock (Pu‘u Keka‘a – Kāʻanapali Beach)
🌅 One of Maui’s most famous and family-friendly snorkeling sites, located at the northern end of Kāʻanapali Beach.
🌊 Calmest in the morning — afternoons can bring stronger currents.
💛 Why you’ll love it: Easy ocean entry, crystal-clear water, and the chance to spot turtles or even rays while floating near shore.
💡 Pure Life Tip: The nearby Sheraton Maui Resort offers easy beach access and gear rentals. While partaking in this best snorkeling in Maui location, you can rent lounge chairs and umbrellas from the Sheraton Resort right behind the beach — quantities can be limited, so arrive early to reserve yours. For added convenience, book your stay at the Sheraton Maui Resort to book chairs and umbrellas directly from the concierge. And be sure to stay and enjoy the sunset cliff-diving ceremony — a Maui classic!
6️⃣ Makena Landing (South Maui)
🐙 Calm, shallow water — ideal for morning snorkels.
🐢 Frequent turtle and ray sightings.
⚠️ Avoid on high-surf or windy afternoons.
7️⃣ Molokini Crater (Offshore)
🚤 Crescent-shaped volcanic crater with visibility up to 150 ft.
🪸 Unmatched coral gardens and schooling fish.

💡 Pure Life Tip: Choose early-morning departures for calm seas and bright light.
💧 Pure Life Tip: Bring a wetsuit, especially for Molokini. The water can drop to around 71°F. A shorty wetsuit keeps you comfortable and lets you stay in the water longer — something both I and our daughter always appreciate!
🤿 Pro Tip from Pure Life Podcast: The boat ride to the crater can get choppy, especially in the afternoon. One of our family members who’s prone to motion sickness got quite seasick on the way there. Pack Dramamine or motion bands — it’ll make your experience far more enjoyable!

❓Best Snorkeling in Maui 2025: FAQ
Q: Can I snorkel in winter?
Yes — South & West Maui are ideal.
Q: Do I need a guided tour?
Generally no – most spots are open to anyone. However both Molokini Crater and Turtle Town need guided and/or organized tours if you wish to visit and snorkel in these spots.
Q: When is the best time of day to go snorkeling?
Avoid sunrise and sunsets as that is usually the time when sharks are most active. Otherwise, mornings up until about 11am tend to be the calmest. Before going snorkeling it is always best to check on current weather and ocean conditions to ensure maximum safety and enjoyment.
Q: Do I need a rental car?
Yes — essential for exploring top snorkel sites around the island.
Q: Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?
No — if you don’t have gear, snorkel rental facilities are available in various areas throughout the Western side of Maui. One of our favorites is Snorkel Bob – we have always had great experiences, their staff is very knowledgeable and their equipment is very good.
🌺 Best Snorkeling in Maui 2025: Final Thoughts
Maui isn’t just another island — it’s a place where ocean magic meets everyday aloha. Whether you’re gliding alongside sea turtles at Mokapu Beach, floating over coral gardens at Ahihi Kinau, or watching the sun dip behind Black Rock, every snorkel here feels like a moment to remember.
We’ve explored these reefs for years as a family, learning the rhythms of the ocean, the best times to swim, and the joy of slowing down to watch a sea turtle glide by. Maui isn’t just about snorkeling; it’s about reconnecting with nature, with each other, and with yourself. As you plan your own underwater adventure, remember to respect the reefs, support local businesses, and pack a little patience — Maui’s magic unfolds slowly, but it’s always worth the wait.
So pack your fins, grab your mask, and dive in. Maui’s waters are waiting — clear, calm, and full of wonder.
