Bora Bora vs. Moorea?
It is one of the best decisions to have to make when planning a trip to French Polynesia, and the two islands offer surprisingly different vacations.
We have spent a week on each, at very different points in our lives. In Moorea, we rented a little Volkswagen and explored the island on our own, discovering beaches, restaurants, mountain scenery and pineapple country along the way. Years later, we returned to French Polynesia with our family for Bora Bora, a trip filled with snorkeling, scuba diving, sharks and stingrays, incredible lagoon days and a very special vow renewal on the beach.
Both were unforgettable. But if you asked us which one we would choose? It depends entirely on the trip you want.
Moorea makes you want to explore. Bora Bora makes you want to experience the lagoon.

Why Choose Bora Bora?
There is a reason Bora Bora has become one of the world’s iconic island destinations. The lagoon really is extraordinary.
We spent a week here as a family, staying at what was then Le Méridien Bora Bora, now The Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa. Much of our trip revolved around the water: snorkeling, scuba diving, boating and simply looking out at that almost impossibly blue lagoon.
One of our favorite days was a private boat trip with a guide who called himself “Crazy.” We swam with blacktip reef sharks, saw lemon sharks and got into the water with stingrays. Our kids absolutely loved it.
Bora Bora also became the setting for something much more personal: renewing our vows on the beach.
That combination, extraordinary natural beauty and the feeling that you are somewhere genuinely special, is where Bora Bora shines.
PLP TIP
Do not spend the entire trip inside your resort. The resort experience is part of Bora Bora, but some of our best memories happened out on the lagoon.
What Is There to Do in Bora Bora?
The water is the main event. Snorkeling and lagoon tours should be near the top of the list, particularly if you want to encounter sharks, rays and tropical marine life. Scuba diving gives you another perspective entirely. You can also kayak or paddleboard, take a sunset cruise, explore coral gardens, spend time at Matira Beach or book a cultural excursion.
We also enjoyed an excursion that combined Polynesian culture with a coconut barbecue, a nice change from simply moving between resort and water. And then there are days when doing very little is exactly the point.
Where to Stay in Bora Bora
Bora Bora is where the resort itself can become part of the destination. Overwater bungalows, lagoon views and private motu resorts are a large part of the appeal, particularly for honeymooners and couples celebrating something special.
That does not mean you need to spend every waking hour at the hotel, but this is one trip where choosing the right property matters.

Who Is Bora Bora Best For?
- Honeymoons and anniversaries
- Milestone trips
- Snorkeling and diving
- Lagoon lovers
- Travelers who want a beautiful resort experience
- Families who love the ocean
Bora Bora is not only for couples. We traveled here with our children, and some of our most memorable family travel experiences happened in that lagoon.
Why Choose Moorea?
Moorea feels different almost immediately. The island invites you to go somewhere.
We took the ferry from Tahiti, rented a little Volkswagen and spent the week driving around the island. That freedom became a big part of the experience.
You have dramatic green mountains rising behind the coastline, beaches, small restaurants and plenty of places where you simply want to stop the car and see what is there.
We explored the pineapple-growing areas, took a Jeep/safari excursion and ate our way around the island, although we still remember discovering that even a simple pancake could somehow cost around $50.
And then there were the chickens. Every morning we would hear their little click-click-click outside, a tiny memory, but somehow one of those details that still makes us smile when we think about Moorea.
That is Moorea. It feels less like retreating into a destination and more like becoming part of the island for a few days.
PLP TIP
Rent a car. Moorea is compact enough to explore easily, and having your own wheels is one of the things that makes the island so enjoyable.
What Is There to Do in Moorea?
Drive. That is genuinely one of our first recommendations. Follow the coast, stop when something looks interesting, find a beach, head into the mountains and give yourself enough freedom to change your plans.
Moorea also has snorkeling and water activities, but the island itself plays a much bigger role in the trip than it does in Bora Bora. Explore the mountainous interior, visit pineapple country, take a Jeep or safari tour and make time for local restaurants. The combination of land and sea gives Moorea its personality.
Where to Stay in Moorea
We stayed at the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort, which gave us the beautiful tropical setting we had come to French Polynesia for while still allowing us to get out and explore easily.
That is an important distinction. In Moorea, we would choose a beautiful hotel, but we would not plan the entire vacation around staying there. The island is too much fun to explore.
Who Is Moorea Best For?
- Independent travelers
- Road-trip people
- Couples who like to explore
- Mountains + ocean travelers
- Food and restaurant explorers
- Travelers who want more freedom
Bora Bora vs. Moorea: Beaches, Lagoon & Water
If your mental picture of French Polynesia is an almost surreal turquoise lagoon, Bora Bora has the advantage. The color and clarity of the water are a major part of the experience, and Bora Bora is particularly compelling for snorkeling, diving and lagoon excursions.
Moorea has beautiful water too, but we remember the trip more broadly: the mountains, drives, restaurants, beaches and exploring the island.
One small firsthand observation: coming from years of Caribbean and Florida travel, we found the water in French Polynesia cooler than we expected. Not bad. Just noticeable.
Bora Bora vs. Moorea: Getting Around
This may be one of the biggest differences between the two trips.
Moorea: Get a car. Driving gives you the freedom to explore the coastline, interior, restaurants and beaches at your own pace. Moorea is also straightforward to pair with Tahiti by ferry.
Bora Bora: Your trip is much more likely to revolve around your resort, boats and organized lagoon experiences. Reaching Bora Bora normally adds an inter-island flight and resort transfer to the trip.
That is neither better nor worse. It is simply a very different style of vacation.
Bora Bora vs. Moorea: Food
Moorea gets our vote if part of your vacation pleasure comes from getting in the car and deciding where you want to eat. Restaurants became part of our exploration.
Bora Bora dining tends to be more intertwined with the resort experience, although getting away from your property for meals and experiences adds variety.
For us, Moorea felt more like eating around an island. Bora Bora felt more like experiencing an extraordinary setting.
Bora Bora vs. Moorea for Couples & Honeymoons
For a honeymoon, anniversary or major celebration, we would give Bora Bora the edge. There is something undeniably special about waking up surrounded by that lagoon, spending the day on the water and returning to a beautiful resort. Our own vow renewal there probably makes us a little biased.
But Moorea should not be dismissed as the “less romantic” option. If your idea of a great couples trip is renting a car, finding restaurants, exploring together and coming back to a beautiful hotel at the end of the day, you may actually prefer Moorea.
Bora Bora vs. Moorea for Families
We have experienced French Polynesia at different stages of our lives, and that is partly why we do not think there is one universal answer.
Bora Bora worked beautifully for our family because our kids loved being in the water. Swimming with sharks and stingrays became one of those experiences everyone still remembers.
For families who prefer more independent exploring and varied land-based days, Moorea may be the easier fit. Think about what your family actually enjoys doing rather than which island has the more famous name.

Is Bora Bora Worth the Extra Cost?
Bora Bora is expensive. There is no particularly elegant way around that. But value and price are not always the same thing.
If you have dreamed about Bora Bora specifically, the lagoon, overwater bungalow, diving, snorkeling or celebrating something important, then this may be exactly the kind of trip where spending more makes sense.
If you are primarily looking for a beautiful French Polynesian island where you can explore independently, eat well, hit the beach and experience both mountains and ocean, Moorea may give you more of what you are actually looking for.
Have Enough Time? Visit Bora Bora and Moorea
If you are traveling all the way to French Polynesia and have 10 days or more, this is our favorite answer.
Do not choose. Combine them.
Start with Moorea, rent a car and explore. Then move to Bora Bora and let the trip shift toward the lagoon. The two islands complement each other remarkably well precisely because they do not offer the same experience.
So, Bora Bora vs. Moorea?
Choose Bora Bora for the lagoon, snorkeling, diving, beautiful resorts and a trip that feels like a celebration.
Choose Moorea for the mountains, road trips, restaurants, independence and the pleasure of exploring an island on your own.
And if you can make the time? Experience both.
Because the real question is not which island is better. It is which island is better for this trip.
