South Florida in January offers a choice of coastal escapes, from West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale to Miami, Key Largo and the Florida Keys. This guide compares several places to stay, the beach experience in each, winter weather and routes for a week or longer.
If you are planning a South Florida winter vacation, the coast and the Keys offer many ways to find that perfect winter escape. You can pair Palm Beach County beaches with West Palm Beach dining, enjoy Fort Lauderdale’s beachfront promenade, choose the Miami Beach neighborhood that suits your pace, or continue south through the Florida Keys.
The right choice depends on how you want to spend your days. Do you want to walk to dinner, snorkel offshore, spread out in a spacious room, or simply enjoy your hotel without a full sightseeing schedule? Start there, and the route becomes much easier to plan.
Where to stay in South Florida in January: At-a-Glance
Destination | Choose it for | Suggested stay | Main planning tradeoff |
Beach days paired with mainland dining or an oceanfront island stay | 2–3 nights | A West Palm Beach address does not mean an oceanfront location
Beachfront walks, dining and nearby beach communities | 2–3 nights | Compare the exact neighborhood and beach access
Broad sandy beaches, dining, architecture and varied resort settings | 2–3 nights | South Beach, Mid Beach and North Beach offer different atmospheres
Waterfront resort time and access to reef excursions | 3–4 nights | Offshore snorkeling depends on sea conditions
A central Keys base, room to settle in and day trips | 3–4 nights | Expect to drive between many outings and restaurants
Historic streets, dining, sunsets and evening atmosphere | 3–4 nights | Location and parking deserve careful attention |
These are suggested lengths of stay, not a checklist. For a long weekend, choose one destination. With a week, two or three bases usually offer a more relaxing trip than trying to stay in every destination.

South Florida weather in January: What to expect in the Keys
January can be a lovely time for coastal walks, outdoor meals and exploring without the intensity of midsummer heat. It is still winter, however, and cold fronts can bring cooler days and windy conditions.
The National Weather Service’s 1991–2020 climate normals put January average daytime highs at about 76°F in both Marathon and Key West, with average overnight lows around 64–66°F at their airport stations. These are long-term averages, not a forecast for your stay. These Keys figures should not be applied to Miami, Fort Lauderdale or the Palm Beaches; conditions differ along the coast, and a cold front can change the feel of your beach day.

Our advice is to plan a trip you will enjoy in several kinds of weather. A pleasant terrace, restaurants you are excited about, a comfortable room and a pool confirmed to be heated can matter as much as beach access.
Can you swim and snorkel in South Florida in January?
You may be comfortable swimming, but do not assume the water will feel tropical. Florida State Parks describes winter water temperatures at Bahia Honda as generally in the lower to middle 70s Fahrenheit. Personal comfort varies, particularly when wind makes getting out of the water feel cooler.
For reef excursions, wind, waves and visibility matter alongside temperature. Ask your operator about expected conditions, suitable equipment and cancellation policies. Keep some flexibility in your schedule rather than saving your only snorkeling trip for your final morning.
Our own Key Largo trip included two canceled group snorkeling outings because of weather. That experience is a reminder to allow alternatives; it is not a January-specific observation. A private charter is also subject to conditions and the captain’s safety decisions.
West Palm Beach Area
For the northern end of this coastal escape, consider the West Palm Beach area and its nearby Atlantic beaches. The important distinction is location: West Palm Beach is on the mainland, while the ocean beaches are in neighboring communities and on the barrier islands. A downtown waterfront view may overlook Lake Worth Lagoon rather than the Atlantic.
Popular beaches to consider
Palm Beach Municipal Beach: A useful choice when you want a beach visit on Palm Beach island, with time elsewhere on the island for dining or shopping. Check the public access point and parking arrangements before setting out.
Singer Island: Consider this area when an oceanfront hotel and a stay organized around the beach appeal to you. Compare the property’s actual beach access and surrounding restaurants; Singer Island is a separate base from downtown West Palm Beach.
Lake Worth Beach Park: Another option south of Palm Beach, worth comparing if you want a public beach outing while staying in the wider area.

Choose your base around your evenings
A downtown West Palm Beach hotel can suit a trip built around restaurants and city outings, with beach visits by car. A Palm Beach or Singer Island stay may make more sense if you want the sand close to your room. Avoid treating those locations as interchangeable when comparing hotel prices.
Our planning recommendation: Start with two or three nights here if you are exploring the coast southward. For a short stay, choose one beach base and leave time to enjoy it instead of driving between every beach on the list.
Fort Lauderdale Area
Fort Lauderdale offers a beach vacation with restaurants, hotel choices and a promenade that makes time beside the ocean part of the day. It is a good area to compare when you want a coastal stay with plenty to do beyond sitting on the sand.
Popular beaches to consider
Fort Lauderdale Beach: Start here for the beachfront promenade and access to hotels and dining. Look closely at the map: some properties require crossing the coastal road to reach the beach.
Lauderdale-By-The-Sea: This nearby beach community offers a smaller, walkable setting. It is also known for shore-access reef activities, making it worth researching if snorkeling interests you. Shore access does not automatically mean easy conditions; ask a local operator about suitable entry points, equipment, currents and any guided options.
Hollywood Beach: South of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood has its own character and the oceanfront Broadwalk for strolling and dining. This is a separate beach town, so compare it as a base rather than assuming it is just outside any Fort Lauderdale hotel.

Make the hotel location work for you
For an easy January escape, prioritize the walks and meals you can enjoy near your accommodation. Check parking charges, pool heating and whether “beachfront” includes direct access or a road crossing. A room with a comfortable balcony adds another way to enjoy the setting on a breezy afternoon.
Our planning recommendation: Choose Fort Lauderdale Beach for a promenade-centered stay, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea for a smaller beach-community setting, or Hollywood Beach when the Broadwalk is a major part of the appeal. You do not need to visit all three to have a worthwhile trip.
Miami Beach Area
Miami Beach gives you several versions of a winter coastal escape. Rather than booking on the strength of a Miami address alone, choose the neighborhood that best matches your preferred pace.
Miami and Miami Beach are separate cities. A mainland Miami hotel can be excellent for dining or sightseeing, but check the journey to the sand if you are planning a beach vacation.
Popular beach areas to consider
South Beach: Choose this area if you want beach time alongside Art Deco surroundings, restaurants and a more energetic atmosphere. If sleep and quiet are priorities, look carefully at the exact street and room location.
Mid Beach: Compare this stretch when the hotel itself is a central part of the vacation. It offers a range of resort settings between South Beach and North Beach, with broad stretches of Atlantic sand.
North Beach: Consider this area for a more residential neighborhood feel and a generally less intense setting than South Beach. A quieter neighborhood does not guarantee an empty beach, especially on a sunny winter weekend.
The Greater Miami and Miami Beach visitor guide explains the three main beach areas.
How to decide
Think about your ideal evening. Do you want to walk out for dinner and nightlife, return to a resort after a beach afternoon, or find a calmer neighborhood base? Match the hotel to that answer, then check fees, beach access and transportation.
Our planning recommendation: Give Miami Beach two or three nights if combining it with another destination. Key Biscayne offers an alternative island stay nearby; on a shorter trip, choose one of these Miami-area bases rather than moving hotels between them.
Key Largo
Key Largo is a natural choice when you want to experience the Keys without driving all the way to Key West. It can also be the entire vacation. There is no requirement to keep moving south simply because the road continues.
Our stay at Baker’s Cay Resort
We spent a week at Baker’s Cay in a Premium One-Bedroom Ocean Suite in the Hammock Wing. The space, waterfront balcony and dining were memorable parts of our stay. We also appreciated the resort’s welcome for dogs.

When considering a January booking, confirm current pool heating, room configuration, pet terms and total charges directly with the property. Our previous stay describes what we experienced at the time.
Plan your snorkeling around the conditions
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is a useful starting point for researching reef outings. Distinguish between snorkeling from shore and taking a boat to an offshore reef; they offer different underwater experiences.
A hotel beach can be enjoyable for a swim or a look beneath the surface without providing the same experience as a reef excursion. Ask where a tour intends to go, how it chooses sites and whether the trip suits your swimming ability.
Our planning recommendation: Give yourself several nights if snorkeling is a priority. Plan an early opportunity to go, with room to reschedule, and keep a waterfront lunch or a relaxed resort day as a welcome alternative.
Marathon Key
Marathon deserves more consideration than a quick stop on the drive to Key West. Its central location makes it useful for travelers who want to explore the Middle and Lower Keys while returning to the same accommodation each evening.
For families or a longer stay, begin with the room layout. Enough beds does not always mean enough privacy, living space or bathrooms. A suite or rental can be particularly appealing when you want breakfast at home and somewhere to relax between outings.
How to shape your stay
Leave time for the Seven Mile Bridge area and consider a visit farther south to Bahia Honda State Park. The park offers beach access and nearshore snorkeling opportunities, with conditions determining what is suitable on the day.
Do not build every day around the water. Mix a beach or boat outing with time to enjoy your accommodation and an unhurried dinner. Driving to a different attraction each morning can turn a central base into a surprisingly busy vacation.
What to look for in accommodation
Check whether “waterfront” means a usable beach, a marina, a seawall or simply a view. Each can be attractive, but they create different stays. If you are bringing children, also check how you reach the water and where they can safely play.
Our planning recommendation: Choose Marathon when a comfortable base and room to spread out matter more than a dense, walkable town center. Review the map of your exact property before booking restaurants or activities.
Key West
Key West offers a different rhythm from a resort-centered stay. It suits travelers who want to explore streets, linger over meals and have options after sunset.
This is where location can change your whole trip. An Old Town stay can put more of your plans within walking distance, while a property farther away may offer a different balance of space, setting and transport needs.
Plan for more than the arrival photo
Give Key West enough time to become part of your vacation rather than the finish line of a long drive. Leave an afternoon open for wandering, choose a few meals you are looking forward to and decide how much evening activity you want near your room.
For a quieter stay, inspect the property’s position relative to nightlife and ask about room location. “Central” and “peaceful” are not always the same thing.
Keep beach expectations realistic
Do not select a Key West hotel assuming every waterfront property has a broad swimming beach. Verify the actual beach or water access, along with pool heating, parking and any shuttle service.
If the main purpose of your trip is a long beach day followed by an early night, compare your options carefully with Key Biscayne or a resort elsewhere in the Keys. If you want dining and exploration to shape the trip, Key West deserves several nights.
Our planning recommendation: Stay at least three nights if time permits, especially after driving down from Miami. Choose the hotel around the evenings you want, as well as the daytime view.
South Florida in January road trip routes
The destinations above are options to choose among, not seven compulsory stops. Start with the length of your trip and the kind of stay you want.
Seven nights along the Atlantic coast
Nights | Base | How to use the time |
1–2 | West Palm Beach area, Palm Beach or Singer Island | Choose one base and enjoy nearby beach time and dining |
3–4 | Fort Lauderdale area | Settle into a beachfront stay or one neighboring beach community |
5–7 | Miami Beach or Key Biscayne | Finish with one Miami-area beach base and time to relax |
This version suits travelers who want broad sandy beaches, restaurants and coastal walks without continuing down the Overseas Highway. Choose Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach International Airport according to your route and flight options; compare rental-car return charges if using different airports.
Seven nights focused on Key Biscayne and the Keys
You can experience the Key Biscayne-to-Key West portion without sleeping in all four destinations. This suggested route uses three bases and treats Marathon as a possible stop rather than another check-in.
Nights | Base | How to use the time |
1–2 | Key Biscayne | Arrive, settle in and enjoy an island day near Miami |
3–4 | Key Largo | Waterfront time and a weather-dependent reef outing |
5–7 | Key West | Drive south with selected stops, then enjoy two full days |
If spacious accommodation and Middle Keys exploring are the priority, substitute Marathon for Key Largo. If the trip is mainly about relaxing, simplify further: three nights in Key Largo or Marathon and four in Key West.
To stay overnight in all four places, consider extending the trip to nine or ten nights. Those additional days let each stay feel like part of the vacation.
A longer trip from the Palm Beaches to Key West
For a coastal journey that includes both the Atlantic beach cities and the Keys, allow roughly 12–14 nights and select four or five overnight bases. For example: three nights in the Palm Beaches, two in Fort Lauderdale, three in Miami Beach or Key Biscayne, three in Key Largo or Marathon, and three in Key West makes a 14-night trip.
If you prefer fewer moves, choose either the Palm Beaches or Fort Lauderdale, then either Miami Beach or Key Biscayne. Staying in all seven areas is possible with more time, but you do not need that many hotel changes to experience the variety of this coastline.
Allow time for the drive
The Overseas Highway is part of the experience, but traffic and stops can make the journey much longer than the map suggests. Avoid placing a boat departure, dinner reservation or flight close to your expected arrival time.
If flying home from Miami or Fort Lauderdale after Key West, allow a substantial buffer. An overnight near your departure airport may be worthwhile before an early flight. Compare flying into Miami and out of Key West, including any one-way rental-car charges, before deciding on a return drive.
What to prioritize before booking
- A stay that works on a windy day. Look for a comfortable room, outdoor spaces you will enjoy and convenient food options.
- The full accommodation cost. Compare parking, mandatory fees, taxes, pet charges and cancellation terms alongside the nightly rate.
- The right water access. An ocean view, a sandy beach and access to an offshore reef are three separate things. Decide which one matters most.
- Space for your group. For five travelers, check the approved occupancy, actual sleeping arrangements and privacy rather than relying on a room category name.
- Flexible water plans. Let marine conditions determine the day, and ask an operator to recommend an outing appropriate for your group.
- A little protection from the elements. Pack layers for breezy evenings, sun protection for time outdoors and insect repellent. Winter does not remove the need for any of them.
South Florida in January: FAQs
Q: Is January a good time to visit South Florida?
Yes, January can be a good fit for a South Florida vacation built around outdoor dining, coastal walks and exploring. Choose your base for the activities you enjoy, allow for cooler spells and keep boat plans flexible. In the Florida Keys, snorkeling also depends on wind, waves and water temperature.
Q: Which is better: Key Largo, Marathon or Key West?
Choose Key Largo for a waterfront stay and reef excursions closer to the mainland, Marathon for a central base and accommodation space, or Key West for a trip shaped by dining, exploring and evening atmosphere.
Q: Is Key Biscayne part of a Florida Keys road trip?
It can be a lovely starting point, but it is a separate island near Miami. Return to the mainland before heading south toward Key Largo and the Overseas Highway.
Q: Does West Palm Beach have an ocean beach?
West Palm Beach is a mainland city on Lake Worth Lagoon. For an Atlantic beach day, compare nearby Palm Beach Municipal Beach, Singer Island and Lake Worth Beach Park. Check the exact location before booking a hotel described as waterfront.
Q: Which Miami Beach area should we choose?
Consider South Beach for a livelier beach-and-city stay, Mid Beach for a hotel-centered escape, or North Beach for a more residential neighborhood setting. The individual property and street matter as much as the neighborhood name.
Q: Can we visit the Palm Beaches, Miami and the Keys in one week?
You can drive the corridor, but we recommend narrowing a week-long vacation to two or three overnight bases. The drive from Miami to Key West, while offering beautiful views, is LONG! It can take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours depending on traffic. Choose an Atlantic beach route or a Keys-focused route, or allow more time to combine both comfortably.
South Florida in January: Final Thoughts
