3 Days in Singapore: A First-Timer’s Itinerary & Local Insights

3 Days in Singapore

Singapore will always be one of our forever homes in our hearts.

Having lived in Singapore for a decade, we had the privilege of experiencing this remarkable country firsthand and witnessing its tremendous transformation. What continues to fascinate us is how naturally Singapore blends its multicultural heritage and longstanding traditions with extraordinary architecture, innovation and an ever-evolving lifestyle.

And then there’s the food!

Singapore is one of the world’s great gastronomic destinations. Chinese, Malay, Indian, Peranakan and other culinary influences come together in a food culture that ranges from humble hawker stalls to exceptional fine dining. Even today, simply thinking about our favorite Singapore dishes makes our mouths water.

We’re already looking forward to returning. But if there’s one thing we know, it’s that 3 days in Singapore is hardly enough to experience everything it has to offer.

If that’s the time you have, here’s how we’d recommend spending your 3 days in Singapore, from iconic attractions and cultural neighborhoods to exceptional food and some of our favorite experiences

Singapore

Day 1: Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay and Singapore After Dark

Morning: Merlion Park and the Waterfront

Begin at Merlion Park, where Singapore’s famous lion-headed, fish-bodied symbol overlooks Marina Bay.

Across the water, Marina Bay Sands dominates the skyline. Walk through the historic Fullerton area and along the waterfront to appreciate the contrast between Singapore’s heritage architecture and contemporary design.

PLP TIP: Visit earlier in the morning, before the tropical heat intensifies.

For more sightseeing ideas, see our Top Attractions in Singapore.

Late Morning and Afternoon: Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay is one of Singapore’s most memorable attractions, combining striking outdoor gardens with beautifully designed cooled conservatories.

Cloud Forest and Flower Dome

Cloud Forest is our priority for a short visit, with its dramatic indoor waterfall, lush vegetation and elevated walkways. Flower Dome offers a contrasting experience with gardens and seasonal floral displays.

If you enjoy horticulture, visit both. Otherwise, allow plenty of time to appreciate Cloud Forest rather than rushing between attractions.

PLP TIP: Check conservatory closures and current admission arrangements before visiting.

PLAN YOUR VISIT: Buy Gardens by the Bay Cloud Forest and Flower Dome tickets.

Afternoon: Sands SkyPark and Singapore’s Rooftop Bars

The Sands SkyPark Observation Deck offers sweeping views of Gardens by the Bay, the waterfront and Singapore’s skyline.

We recommend experiencing the view during daylight, when you can appreciate the city’s remarkable architecture. Sunset is another beautiful option if your schedule allows.

PLAN YOUR VISIT: Buy Sands SkyPark Observation Deck tickets.

Our Rooftop Recommendations

We’ve personally enjoyed CÉ LA VI and Spago at Marina Bay Sands, and both offer breathtaking views.

CÉ LA VI — Marina Bay Sands

Best for panoramic views, cocktails and a lively atmosphere. We loved the experience, particularly the extraordinary setting high above Marina Bay.

Spago Bar & Lounge — Marina Bay Sands

Another personal favorite, with an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. A wonderful choice for afternoon cocktails, a leisurely lunch or sunset drinks.

LAVO Italian Restaurant & Rooftop Bar — Marina Bay Sands

A strong option for travelers who want Italian dining alongside spectacular rooftop views.

Lantern — The Fullerton Bay Hotel

A stylish rooftop bar offering a different perspective, looking across Marina Bay toward the skyline.

Evening: Spectra Light-and-Water Show

Finish the evening at Spectra, the free light-and-water show outside The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.

Illuminated fountains, music and projections create a memorable experience against the waterfront skyline.

Watch from the Event Plaza area for a close view. Depending on current schedules, you may also be able to enjoy the illuminated Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay.

PLP TIP: Check showtimes in advance and allow enough time to move between the two locations.

Our Marina Bay Sands Experience: Why We’d Stay Again

We’ve stayed at Marina Bay Sands as a family of five, and it was fantastic.

Our accommodation was exceptionally spacious, with a large terrace that made the stay feel particularly special. We appreciated having room to relax and enjoy the hotel itself.

The Infinity Pool and RISE Buffet

One of the greatest advantages of staying here is access to the famous rooftop infinity pool, reserved exclusively for registered hotel guests.

The hotel also offers RISE, its international buffet restaurant in the Tower 1 lobby, with breakfast, lunch and dinner options.

Between the pool, restaurants, shopping and convenient location near Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands is more than simply a place to sleep.

Would we stay again? Absolutely. We’d particularly recommend considering it for a first Singapore visit or a special occasion.

PLP TIP: Room sizes, terraces, views and occupancy limits vary. Families should confirm the exact bedding arrangement before booking.

Singapore

Day 2: Cultural Neighborhoods and Singapore’s Extraordinary Food

Morning: Chinatown and Hawker Food

Start in Chinatown, exploring its historic shophouses, temples and traditional businesses. The area around the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is especially interesting.

Then visit a hawker centre such as Maxwell Food Centre or Chinatown Complex Food Centre.

Singapore’s hawker culture is one of its greatest culinary treasures. Some of the most memorable meals here come from simple food stalls.

What to Try at a Singapore Hawker Centre

  • Satay: Grilled meat skewers with peanut sauce.
  • Sambal stingray: Grilled stingray with a spicy sambal topping.
  • Murtabak: Savory stuffed flatbread.
  • Char kway teow: Stir-fried flat rice noodles with a smoky flavor.
  • Laksa: Noodles in a rich, spicy broth, often with coconut milk.
  • Ice kachang (ais kacang): Colorful shaved ice with sweet syrups and toppings such as red beans, jelly and sweet corn.

PLP TIP: Try dishes from several stalls, bring some cash and save room for ice kachang. Check individual stall opening days.

Late Morning and Afternoon: Little India and Kampong Glam

Little India is filled with colorful shophouses, temples, textile stores, flower garlands and wonderful Indian restaurants. Consider a lunch of biryani, dosa, roti prata or a traditional banana-leaf meal.

Continue to Kampong Glam, where Sultan Mosque anchors a neighborhood known for its Malay and Muslim heritage. Explore Arab Street’s shops and textiles, then wander along Haji Lane for boutiques, cafés and street art.

These neighborhoods beautifully illustrate Singapore’s cultural diversity.

PLP TIP: If you prefer a leisurely pace, choose either Little India or Kampong Glam rather than rushing through both.

Afternoon: Raffles Singapore, Afternoon Tea or Orchard Road

A Singapore Sling at Raffles Singapore’s Long Bar is one of our favorite classic Singapore experiences.

Alternatively, enjoy a traditional afternoon tea at one of the city’s beautiful heritage hotels:

  • Raffles Singapore, The Grand Lobby: An elegant, classic setting.
  • The Fullerton Bay Hotel, The Landing Point: Sophisticated waterfront surroundings.
  • The Fullerton Hotel Singapore: Historic architecture and a refined atmosphere.

Choose one experience rather than attempting all three.

Optional: Orchard Road and Chatterbox Chicken Rice

If shopping is a priority, visit Orchard Road, home to ION Orchard, Takashimaya, Paragon and other major shopping destinations.

One of our favorite Singapore dishes is Hainanese chicken rice, and our personal favorite is Chatterbox at Hilton Singapore Orchard.

Its Mandarin Chicken Rice combines tender chicken, fragrant rice and flavorful sauces in a comfortable restaurant setting.

We’d recommend Chatterbox for lunch or an early meal, rather than adding it after an already substantial day of eating.

PLP TIP: Orchard Road and Chatterbox are optional additions. For a more relaxed day, prioritize the cultural neighborhoods and your seafood dinner.

Dinner: Chili Crab and Black Pepper Crab — The Flavors We Still Crave

If there’s one dining experience we particularly miss about Singapore, it’s the seafood.

Ever since leaving, we’ve searched for restaurants serving Singapore-style chili crab and black pepper crab, finding a few in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. But nothing quite replaces enjoying these dishes in Singapore itself.

Chili crab is known for its rich, savory, slightly sweet and spicy sauce. Black pepper crab delivers a bold, peppery flavor. Both are among our absolute favorites.

For us, they’re more than memorable vacation dishes. They’re part of what makes Singapore feel like home.

Make time for a proper seafood dinner. Restaurants such as JUMBO Seafood are popular choices, with different locations to consider.

PLP TIP: Crab is often priced by weight. Confirm the price before ordering and reserve ahead at popular restaurants.

Optional: Singapore River Cruise

If you still have energy, consider a Singapore River cruise from Clarke Quay or a leisurely walk along Clarke Quay and Boat Quay.

The illuminated bridges, historic quays and waterfront architecture offer another perspective on the city after dark.

PLAN YOUR VISIT: Check Singapore River Cruise tickets.

Sentosa

Day 3: Choose Your Singapore Experience

Singapore offers far too much to fit into one final day. We’d choose one of these three options based on your interests.

Option A: Sentosa Island

Best for: Families, beaches, theme parks and resort experiences

Sentosa can easily fill an entire day. Attractions and experiences include Universal Studios Singapore, Singapore Oceanarium, Adventure Cove Waterpark, the Singapore Cable Car, beach clubs and Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong beaches.

Families may prefer a major attraction, while couples might enjoy a more relaxed beach day and waterfront dining.

PLP TIP: Choose one major attraction and leave time to enjoy the island.

PLAN YOUR VISIT: Check Universal Studios Singapore tickets with optional transfer.

Option B: Mandai Wildlife Reserve

Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts and families

Mandai Wildlife Reserve offers several distinctive experiences:

  • Bird Paradise: Expansive aviaries and birdlife from around the world.
  • River Wonders: River-themed wildlife habitats and freshwater species.
  • Rainforest Wild ASIA: Rainforest landscapes, trails and adventure experiences.
  • Singapore Zoo: Extensive animal habitats and family-friendly wildlife encounters.
  • Night Safari: A distinctive evening experience focused on nocturnal wildlife, with tram rides and walking trails.

We’d choose one daytime park, with Night Safari as an optional evening addition if you’re comfortable with a longer day.

PLP TIP: Check admission requirements, opening hours and transportation arrangements before visiting.

PLAN YOUR VISIT:

Check Singapore Zoo admission tickets.

Check Night Safari admission tickets.

Option C: Singapore Botanic Gardens and Katong

Best for: Gardens, heritage neighborhoods and a slower pace

Begin at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the city’s most beautiful green spaces. The National Orchid Garden is particularly appealing for garden enthusiasts.

Later, explore Katong and Joo Chiat, known for colorful heritage shophouses, Peranakan influences, local shops and food culture.

This is an excellent option if you prefer neighborhood exploration to theme parks or wildlife attractions.

PLP TIP: Allow time to wander, browse the shops and enjoy a leisurely meal rather than following a rigid schedule.
