Our Under Canvas Smoky Mountains Experience
We have always loved being outdoors, but our travel style leans toward a little more comfort than traditional camping usually provides. Give us mountain air, campfires, star-filled skies and long days outside – but a cozy bed, a private bathroom, thoughtful food and a warm place to settle in at night make the experience much more our speed.
That is what made Under Canvas Smoky Mountains such a memorable stay for our family of five. We traveled with our Labrador, Neo, and found that Under Canvas preserved the parts of camping we love – being close to nature, slowing down and spending evenings around the fire while adding just enough comfort to let us fully enjoy it.
Our king-size bed was exceptionally cozy, the wood-burning stove made cool mountain nights feel inviting, the dining was far better than we expected, and the staff brought an easy warmth to the entire experience. Crafted cocktails, outdoor games, nightly s’mores and the extraordinary Smoky Mountains setting made the camp feel less like somewhere we simply slept and more like part of the journey itself.
For us, this is a wonderful example of meaningful luxury: making it comfortable enough to slow down and experience the destination more fully.
Is Under Canvas Smoky Mountains Worth It?
For our travel style, absolutely. Under Canvas is especially appealing if you love nature but prefer more comfort than a traditional campsite. You still hear the forest at night, gather around communal fires, make s’mores and wake up surrounded by the mountains. The difference is that you can retreat to a cozy bed, an en-suite bathroom in select tent categories and a wood-burning stove when the temperature drops.
It offers a more comfortable way to get back to nature while preserving the sense of place that makes an outdoor trip special.
One Thing to Know: Under Canvas Is Intentionally Wi-Fi-Free
Under Canvas does not offer guest Wi-Fi at its camps, by design. The idea is to make it easier to disconnect from screens and reconnect with the people and landscape around you. Tents are intentionally low-tech, with lantern lighting and charging options that vary by camp and tent category.
We appreciated that philosophy during our stay. Evenings naturally became about dinner, games, cocktails, the fire, s’mores and simply being outside together rather than retreating to separate screens.

What Are the Tents Like?
Our king-size bed, wood-burning stove and private bathroom gave us the comfort we wanted after long outdoor days. Tent categories differ; check the bed configuration and whether your choice has an en-suite bathroom before reserving. The canvas tents zip closed, but they are not conventional lockable hotel rooms. The more structured, thoughtfully designed setting felt reassuring and comfortable for our travel style.
Dining, Cocktails and Evenings at Camp
One of our favorite surprises was the food. We expected the setting to be memorable; we did not necessarily expect dining to become part of what we remembered most. The on-site meals were genuinely enjoyable, and specialty crafted cocktails made evenings around camp feel considered without becoming formal.
That balance carried into the rest of the evening: outdoor games, communal fire pits, complimentary s’mores and the chance to simply sit beneath the Smoky Mountains sky. Under Canvas makes it easy to spend the evening at camp rather than feeling as though you need to leave in search of entertainment. Programming varies by night and season.

Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains sits on wooded land about 10 miles from Gatlinburg, giving us access to the national park and town while making the camp itself a place to spend time. We could build days around hikes, wildlife watching and scenic drives, then return for dinner and an evening by the fire. Cades Cove, Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome) and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail are among the area’s well-known options; check park conditions and seasonal road openings before setting out.

Where Else Can You Stay With Under Canvas?
As of September 2026, Under Canvas has camps in Acadia, Maine; Bryce Canyon, Utah; Columbia River Gorge, Washington; Glacier, Montana; Grand Canyon, Arizona; Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee; Lake Powell–Grand Staircase, Utah; Moab, Utah; Mount Rushmore, South Dakota; North Yellowstone–Paradise Valley, Montana; West Yellowstone, Montana; White Mountains, New Hampshire; Yosemite, California; and Zion, Utah. Santa Fe, New Mexico has been announced for 2027. ULUM Moab and the Outdoor Collection are distinct properties in the broader portfolio.
We considered incorporating other Under Canvas camps into our own road trips, including several in the Southwest, but the timing did not work for those journeys. They remain exactly the kind of places we would consider when building a future national-park road trip.

What Is It Like Staying at Under Canvas With a Dog?
We traveled with our Labrador, Neo, and he seemed every bit as happy with the setting as we were. Being able to step directly outside into a nature-filled environment felt far easier for us than navigating elevators, hotel hallways and limited outdoor space with a large dog.
That was another part of the comfort for us: Neo could simply be part of the trip. For travelers who regularly road-trip with a dog, Under Canvas offers an appealing combination of outdoor access and thoughtfully designed accommodations.
Before booking: Under Canvas welcomes dogs for a nightly pet fee and requires that pets not be left unattended. Confirm the latest policy for your dates and check whether your planned trails or tours permit dogs. The national park has restrictions on pets on most trails.

No. Under Canvas intentionally does not provide guest Wi-Fi at its camps. Cell coverage varies by carrier and location.
Do the tents have private bathrooms?
Some tent categories have an en-suite bathroom; compare the exact category before booking. Our tent’s private bathroom was a welcome comfort.
Can you bring a dog?
Yes, dogs are welcome for a nightly fee and cannot be left unattended. We brought Neo, our Labrador, and appreciated how easy it was to step outdoors with him.
Is there food on site?
Yes. On-site dining and crafted cocktails were highlights of our stay. Menus and hours can change by season.
How far is it from Gatlinburg?
Under Canvas says its Great Smoky Mountains camp is about 10 miles from Gatlinburg. Allow extra time for mountain roads and seasonal traffic.
