There’s something about Marrakech that stays with you. It’s the contrast – the energy of the Medina, the calm of a riad courtyard, the rhythm of the call to prayer drifting through the city as the sun sets. It’s busy, layered, sometimes overwhelming – and then suddenly, completely peaceful.
We spent several days here as part of our Morocco itinerary for 7 days, and it quickly became one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
If you’re planning to visit, this Marrakech travel guide walks through where to stay, what to do, and how to experience the city in a way that feels immersive – not rushed. Also, for mapping out your route, our Morocco itinerary for 7 days shares how we structured everything across Marrakech, the desert, and northern Morocco.
Wondering what to pack? Our What to Wear in Morocco guide covers exactly what worked for us across Marrakech, the Agafay desert, and Tangier – including practical outfits for walking the Medina, layering for cooler evenings, and when a kaftan works beautifully (and when it doesn’t).

Marrakech Travel Guide: Best Places to Stay
Staying in a riad is part of the experience and ranks as a top priority for any Marrakech travel guide!
Tucked inside the Medina, these traditional homes are built around quiet courtyards—offering a calm contrast to the energy just outside the doors.

Marrakech Travel Guide: Top Things to Do
Marrakech is one of those cities where wandering is part of the experience—but a few places are worth building into your plan.
Ben Youssef Madrasa
Quiet, detailed, and one of the most beautiful architectural spaces in the city.
Majorelle Garden
A calm, curated space that offers a break from the Medina. Skip the lines and plan ahead – explore top-rated Marrakech tours and experiences
Medina & Souks
You’ll likely spend a lot of time here—getting slightly lost, discovering small shops, and finding your rhythm in the city.
Jemaa el-Fnaa (Sunset into Evening)
The energy shifts throughout the day as various vendors are present vying for your attention, but evenings are when it really comes alive. Jemaa el-Fnaa transforms at night into an immersive culinary theater, where smoke rises from grill-lined stalls, the scent of spices lingers in the air, and the energy of musicians and storytellers creates an unforgettable backdrop to one of Morocco’s most iconic food scenes.
We found it best during the day to observe rather than engage, especially with the various vendors pushing snake and other animal photo setups. However, for a truly immersive evening experience, we highly recommend hiring a local guide to take you on an unforgettable journey through the flavors of the market, stopping at the hidden, off-the-beaten-path spots only the locals know about.
🐪 Marrakech Travel Guide: Top Day Trips

- Camel rides
- Tea experience
- Optional dinner under the stars
Explore Agafay desert experiences and availability for your dates.
We visited Agafay as part of our 7-day Morocco itinerary – it’s one of the easiest and most memorable ways to experience the desert without traveling far from Marrakech.
Atlas Mountains
A quieter, scenic contrast to Marrakech, a visit to the Atlas Mountains is a great excursion if you’re looking to slow things down for a day. Browse Atlas Mountain day trips and experiences
Marrakech Travel Guide: Best Places to Eat
No Marrakech travel guide would be complete without highlighting the amazing cuisine options available. Marrakech’s food scene is as layered as the city itself – ranging from casual local spots to beautifully designed restaurants that feel like full evening experiences.
From traditional Moroccan flavors to more refined, globally influenced dining, the city offers a rich culinary rhythm. Evenings, in particular, became a highlight – unfolding slowly with atmosphere, music, and a sense of occasion.
Restaurants We Would Return To
Comptoir Darna
A true Marrakech classic – vibrant, atmospheric, and distinctly Moroccan in spirit.
Dinner here feels like a full experience, where music, movement, and setting come together effortlessly. It’s lively yet refined, striking a balance that feels both energetic and elevated. The interiors and rooftop setting add to the sense of place, making it unmistakably Marrakech.
The food is rich and satisfying, and the wine list pairs beautifully with the experience – we found ourselves lingering over multiple bottles of Moroccan red throughout the evening.
If you’re staying at Savoy Le Grand Hotel, it’s an easy walk – making it a seamless choice for a night out.
Nobu Marrakech
Equally elevated, with a more contemporary lens.
The atmosphere is polished and refined, with a modern edge that still feels aligned with Marrakech’s upscale dining scene. The cocktails stand out here—thoughtfully crafted and memorable, making it an ideal setting for a more elevated evening.
As a Japanese native, this was also a welcome return to familiar flavors after several days of Moroccan cuisine—sometimes a well-executed sushi and rice dish is exactly what’s needed to reset the palate.
Azar Restaurant
Closely connected in spirit to Comptoir Darna, with its own distinct personality.
Warm, lively, and immersive, with a strong sense of atmosphere throughout the evening. A natural choice for another night out that blends food, music, and setting into one cohesive experience.
🍴 Other Restaurants to Know
Cafe Clock
Nomad Marrakech
La Maison Arabe
Le Trou Au Mur
Each offers a different perspective on Marrakech’s evolving culinary scene – from traditional to more contemporary interpretations.
🌇 Rooftop Bars & Restaurants
One of the most memorable rhythms in Marrakech happens above the streets. As the sun begins to set, rooftops across the Medina come to life—offering open-air views, warm light, and a slower, more reflective pace to end the day.
El Fenn
Dar Zellij (especially romantic)
Kabana
Le Pergola
Le Salama Sky Bar
Any of these establishments are ideal for sunset drinks or a relaxed evening overlooking the city.
