Morocco Itinerary 7 Days: The Ultimate Marrakech, Tangier & Chefchaouen Travel Guide

Morocco Itinerary 7 Days

Morocco draws us in through its contrasts: spice-scented souks and quiet riad courtyards, the open landscape of Agafay and the blue lanes of Chefchaouen. Mint tea, neighborhood bakeries and meals worth lingering over are as much a part of the journey as the sights.

This Morocco 7-day itinerary follows our route through Marrakech, Agafay, Tangier and Chefchaouen, with food, a cooking class and a hammam woven into the sightseeing. Some of our favorite moments weren’t planned at all, including slowing down with mint tea in a courtyard or finding a bakery we might otherwise have missed.

There is an important planning trade-off: the route combines two regions with domestic flights and a full-day road excursion. It suits couples, first-time visitors comfortable arranging transfers, and families who enjoy active travel. It offers variety, but it is an ambitious week rather than an entirely relaxed holiday.

Short on Time? Your Morocco 7-Day Itinerary at a Glance

Allow seven nights and departure on Day 8. The original route arrives in Marrakech, flies north on Day 5 and returns to Marrakech on Day 7. Seven days cannot cover all of Morocco; this route does not include the Sahara dunes.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Marrakech; settle into your riad, then explore the medina as energy allows.
  • Day 2: Agafay desert excursion; return to Marrakech.
  • Day 3: Marrakech food tour.
  • Day 4: Moroccan cooking class in Marrakech.
  • Day 5: Hammam if flight timing permits; fly from Marrakech to Tangier.
  • Day 6: Chefchaouen day trip from Tangier; return to Tangier.
  • Day 7: Tangier sightseeing; return flight to Marrakech.
  • Day 8: Depart from Marrakech.

Transport: Arrange airport transfers and an agreed pickup point for medina stays. A private driver offers flexibility for Chefchaouen; you do not need a rental car for the whole itinerary.

Where to sleep: Marrakech on Nights 1–4, Tangier on Nights 5–6 and Marrakech again on Night 7. Confirm both domestic flights before committing to nonrefundable accommodation.

Pace: Marrakech has room for slower mornings; Days 5–7 require careful coordination. For Chefchaouen, budget roughly 2.5–3 hours each way as a planning allowance, plus stops and traffic. Optional slower adjustment: add nights in the north, or omit the northern section if you have only seven calendar days including departure.

Day 1 — Arrival in Marrakech

Marrakech Ben Y

Where to Stay: La Villa Nomade

A calm, design-forward riad tucked inside the medina, La Villa Nomade offers the kind of retreat we appreciate after a long flight.

Check rates for your dates →

PLP Tip: Ask your riad to arrange your airport arrival and confirm where the vehicle can stop. A medina address may involve a final walk with luggage; arrange help in advance rather than relying on an unfamiliar map pin.

La Villa Nomade

What to See, Depending on Your Arrival Time

After checking in, begin with one manageable outing. If you arrive early enough, visit Ben Youssef Madrasa before wandering through the medina. Its intricate detail and quieter spaces make a memorable introduction. The official visitor site lists tickets for purchase at the entrance; check its current opening information before going.

Continue through the souks and make your way to Jemaa el-Fnaa around sunset. The food stalls and shifting rhythm of the square are part of its appeal. With a late arrival, save the madrasa for a free morning on Day 3 or 4.

PLP Tip: Save your riad’s address and the nearest accessible meeting point offline. Keep small cash for purchases, ask before photographing people and decline unwanted offers politely. We recommend skipping monkey and snake photo setups.

Optional Experiences and Alternative Stays

A guided medina walk can help you find your bearings; ask your riad to arrange a licensed guide and agree on the route and fee. Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs are alternatives for a free morning, not additions you must squeeze into arrival day. An Atlas Mountains day trip would replace another full day or require a longer stay.

Our Marrakech Travel Guide adds detail on exploring the city. For accommodation areas and practical comparisons, read Where to Stay in Marrakech.

These are alternative accommodation recommendations; the links do not imply we stayed at every property. Confirm room occupancy and child policies for your party.

Day 2 — Agafay Desert Experience

Agafey

Agafay gives this itinerary a change of scenery without the much longer journey to the Sahara. Its landscape is rocky and open rather than the sweeping sand dunes travelers associate with Merzouga.

How to Plan the Excursion

Keep the morning flexible, then head out with an arranged transfer for sunset. Our itinerary includes a private transfer, a camel ride, tea and the option of dinner under the stars. Return to the same Marrakech riad afterward; no accommodation move is needed.

For a current bookable alternative, compare an Agafay sunset dinner and show with transfers. This listing is an alternative to arranging a private outing; confirm the camp, group size, pickup point and whether a camel ride is included before booking.

PLP Tip: Decide whether you want a quieter camp dinner or a larger evening show. They offer quite different atmospheres. Ask the operator for the complete pickup-to-return duration and bring a layer for the evening.

Day 3 — Marrakech Food Tour

Chicken Tajine
Food tour

Food is one of the most memorable parts of this journey: hidden bakeries, stalls we might not have tried alone, preserved lemon and spices, and the patience behind a slowly cooked tagine.

Leave the daytime open for a medina stroll or an attraction you postponed on arrival, then make the food tour your main evening plan. Ask about dietary requirements before booking and avoid scheduling a separate large dinner immediately afterward.

Check availability for a Marrakech street food tour by night →

The linked experience is a current booking option, not a claim that it is the same operator we used. Check its meeting point, tastings and available languages for your date.

Stay: Return to your Marrakech riad. Keeping the same base makes room for the slower courtyard moments we love.

Day 4 — Moroccan Cooking Class

Tagine

A cooking class brings the flavors of yesterday’s food tour into focus. Make it the day’s main experience and leave time to enjoy the meal rather than racing straight to another attraction.

Cooking Classes to Consider

  • Cafe Clock — a social, cultural setting. Confirm the Marrakech location, class duration and menu when reserving.
  • La Maison Arabe — a polished option for comfort-luxury travelers. Its cooking workshops welcome visitors as well as hotel guests.
  • Faim d’Epices — closure notice: this appeared in our original recommendations, but its official website announces closure. Do not plan around a class here without fresh confirmation directly from the business.

Choose one class; these are alternatives, not three visits in one day. Check whether market visits, transfers and the meal are included, and share allergies before you book.

Stay: Marrakech, with your luggage at the same riad before tomorrow’s move north.

Day 5 — Hammam and Flight to Tangier

spa

A hammam and a final coffee in the medina make a lovely farewell to Marrakech, provided the flight schedule leaves enough time. Pack first and confirm luggage storage, transfer arrangements and your airline’s check-in deadline before booking a treatment.

You can ask your riad to arrange a spa-style hammam, or check availability for a traditional hammam experience at Mouassine. The linked experience is a public traditional hammam option; review privacy arrangements, what to wear and treatment inclusions if you prefer a private spa setting.

PLP Tip: Flight timing comes first. If your departure is earlier in the day, move the hammam to a free period on Day 3 or 4 rather than squeezing it into the airport transfer window.

Fly to Tangier

Fly from Marrakech to Tangier

Our original route uses an evening flight north. Ryanair lists the Marrakech–Tangier route, but an evening departure is not guaranteed on your chosen date. Confirm the actual operating day, airport arrival deadline and baggage allowance before booking the rest of the trip.

Arrange a transfer from Tangier airport to your accommodation and ask whether the final approach is on foot. Tell the riad about a late arrival in advance.

Rail alternative: check ONCF’s official journey planner. ONCF’s network information describes Al Boraq between Casablanca and Tangier, with onward mainline connections to Marrakech. Check your exact itinerary rather than assuming a direct high-speed train from Marrakech. Rail requires a substantial travel block and would replace the relaxed morning.

Dar Sabaa

Where to Stay in Tangier

Use Tangier as your base for Nights 5 and 6, keeping your room while you visit Chefchaouen. Confirm room access, steps and luggage assistance if mobility or carrying bags is a concern.

Day 6 — Chefchaouen Day Trip from Tangier

Chefchaouen.main
Kitty Chefchaouen
chefchaouen

The blue lanes of Chefchaouen offer a striking contrast to Marrakech. This is a full-day excursion from Tangier, with a long road journey in both directions.

Transport and Timing

Our route uses a private day trip. For planning, allow roughly 2.5–3 hours each way, plus stops, pickup and traffic; this is a working allowance, not a guaranteed journey time. Morocco’s tourist office gives a shorter indicative drive, so ask your driver for an estimate from your actual riad. Leave early and agree on the return time, vehicle, seat belts, child seats if needed, guiding and any shopping stops.

If you prefer a packaged excursion, compare a Chefchaouen day trip from Tangier with a local guide. Check whether the selected option is shared or private; do not assume a private vehicle from the activity title alone.

What to Do

Wander the blue streets, leave time for photos and pause for a rooftop lunch with mountain views. Ask permission before photographing residents, shops or doorways, and keep entrances clear. Comfortable shoes matter on the stepped lanes.

PLP Tip: Keep the day focused on Chefchaouen rather than adding more distant stops. In rain or winter weather, ask the driver about road conditions and allow extra time.

Optional Adjustment: Stay Overnight

An overnight stay would mean changing this itinerary and its hotel bookings. For a longer trip, the original accommodation suggestions are:

Stay on the original route: Return to Tangier for a second night. These Chefchaouen hotels are optional alternatives, not claims of personal stays.

Day 7 — Tangier and Return to Marrakech

Tangier
tangier

Tangier felt more relaxed to us than Marrakech, with café culture, coastal views and a different rhythm to its medina. Start with a walk through the old town, then pause for coffee and time by the water.

Optional coastal outing: Cap Spartel and Hercules Cave appeared in our original suggestions. Include them only if your flight leaves a comfortable margin. You can compare a Cap Spartel and Hercules Cave excursion; check its duration, entry inclusions and camel-ride component before deciding whether it suits your day. These sights are also an alternative to spending more time in the city, not a requirement.

Return to Marrakech

Our original route flies back to Marrakech this evening. Check Tangier–Marrakech flights directly with the airline; operating days and departure times vary. Leave time to collect your luggage, reach the airport and complete check-in.

Stay: Reserve your final Marrakech night separately, since the Tangier stay interrupts your Marrakech booking. La Villa Nomade remains an option if available; arrange any late check-in before departure from Tangier.

PLP Tip: Keep an overnight buffer before your international departure. Separate tickets may not protect an onward connection. Optional adjustment: if it works with your international flights, departing from Tangier avoids this return leg, but changes the original route.

Day 8 — Departure from Marrakech

BF

Allow time for breakfast at your riad if your flight permits, then take your prearranged airport transfer. Confirm the pickup point and check-in deadline the day before.

This departure day is additional to the seven itinerary days above. If you have only seven calendar days including flights home, shorten the route or add a night rather than relying on a rushed connection.

Morocco 7-Day Itinerary: Frequently Asked Questions

Is seven days enough for Morocco?

It is enough for a focused introduction, not the whole country. This route combines Marrakech and Agafay with Tangier and a Chefchaouen excursion. It includes seven nights and departure on Day 8, and its northern section is ambitious.

What can you realistically see in a week?

Follow the places in this itinerary and resist adding Fes, the Sahara or another long excursion. Marrakech supplies most of the food and cultural time, while Tangier and Chefchaouen add a northern contrast.

Should you rent a car or hire a driver?

For this route we favor arranged airport transfers, flights between Marrakech and Tangier when schedules fit, and a driver for Chefchaouen. A rental car is unnecessary for medina sightseeing. Independent drivers should arrange parking outside restricted lanes and confirm the walk to their riad.

How much travel time should you allow?

Chefchaouen is a full-day outing: budget around 2.5–3 hours each way from Tangier as a planning allowance, plus stops. Flight days also require transfers, check-in and luggage collection. Check ONCF for date-specific rail journey times if considering that alternative.

Is this suitable for first-time visitors and families?

It can suit travelers who are comfortable with active sightseeing and arranged transport. Families should confirm room occupancy, steps, child seats and activity age limits. With younger children or travelers who tire on long drives, we would add nights or focus on Marrakech and Agafay.

Can you follow it independently?

Yes, by booking accommodation and transport separately, with local guides or tours where helpful. Confirm both domestic flights first. A full escorted tour is optional; a reliable riad can help coordinate arrivals and local arrangements.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn are useful starting points for this mix of destinations. Marrakech can be hot in summer, while northern Morocco can be cooler and wetter in winter. Check Morocco’s official climate guidance and the forecast for your dates; Ramadan and holidays may change opening and meal arrangements.

What should you wear?

Choose modest, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes and layers for evenings. Ask your hammam about its own clothing requirements. Our What to Wear in Morocco guide covers practical packing choices.

Do you need cash?

Carry some Moroccan dirhams for small purchases, markets and transport, and confirm payment methods for excursions and accommodation. For etiquette, arrivals and practical preparations, read Things to Know Before Visiting Morocco.

MOrocco

A Week of Contrasts, with Time for the Details

What stays with us is the contrast: Marrakech’s food and energy, the open landscape of Agafay, and the blue streets and coastal atmosphere of the north. Morocco is sensory, layered and sometimes unpredictable, which is part of what made our journey memorable.

Give the transport days the attention they need, then leave space for the smaller pleasures: tea in a riad courtyard, the scent of a bakery and a meal enjoyed without watching the clock.

Plan Your Morocco Trip

Start with your international flights and both domestic connections, then reserve your Marrakech and Tangier stays using the property links above. Add the experiences that suit your interests once the transport is confirmed.

For a rail alternative, use ONCF’s official booking site. Ask your accommodation to arrange airport transfers and agree on meeting points, luggage help and prices in advance. A car rental makes more sense for a different itinerary or a longer road trip than for this city-based route.

Compare group sizes, cancellation terms and inclusions before booking activities. A lower headline price may cover a different experience from a private outing.
